This is likely not going to be in Corvallis, we have to be in the top 65 teams to play there, this tournament will likely be a one day tournament on April 16th or 17th, more information will come after this Sunday's tournament. If you already know you can't make it then please let me know.

Please be at the Gym at 7:15. We play first at 8:00am. When I get out of the coaches meeting I should be able to go out onto the court to see my entire team warming up. If you're late it will be reflected in your playing time for the first match of the day. Also, remember your playing time will be effected by your practice attendance and practice attention.

We are going to pack our own lunch and please remember you have to keep it in the car. This facility allows no food and drink anywhere inside. The tournament director will give a 10 point penalty if that rule is not followed.

It looks like we ref first. I will need everyone there by 8:15 and not a minute later, I'm being generous already as I'm certain all other teams will be there when doors open at 7:40. If we remember our defense and hit the way we did in our last practice then we will do well. Also, remember we will be counting missed serves, just putting nice and easy in zone 7.

We are looking forward to a fun friendly tournament this Saturday. Here are several things that we need to address before your team arrives at the tournament location.

GYM AND FACILITY RULES:

In respect to our District School Facilities, we ask all coaches cooperation in enforcing the following

rules. It is very important that you inform your players, parents and guests of these rules. Especially food and drink in gyms.

1. Water only in the gyms. NO Gatorade, flavored water, etc., just plain water.

2. Cooler and food will allow ONLY in the cafeteria area.

3. Out-side chairs may be use in certain part of the gym with a rug, towel or blanket underneath.

4. No smoking or alcohol allowed on school grounds (Federal Law)

6. No ball playing in hallways and cafeteria area.

7. All teams and groups must clean up after themselves before leaving designated area.

Violation of these rules will result to a 5 point deduction of next match.

That means we play first thing in the morning, please show up at 7:15 get situated and get your gear on, we will need to start warming up right away, a solid warm up will be important after sitting in the car and waking up early, so get it going right away, I will be in the coaches meeting and I expect that when I'm done I can go onto the court and see my whole team warming up.

IMPORTANT: Lunch, we didn't get enough parent volunteers for this tournament and since I had my baby I have been unable to coordinate it, so this time we are going to have to pack our own lunches. Remember the players can not leave the facility so please pack a lunch and plenty of snacks and drinks to last the whole day.

Ladies-
It's really important that we win our pool, if we want to move up in the rankings and start playing against tougher competition. Our goal is to stay focused on the task and play each ball to the best of our ability. We have to continue to improve so this tournament will be very important to show that we deserve to move up and play against tougher competition.

Here is the tournament information that I received below, we will have to bring our A game if we want to do well at this tournament these are high ranking teams. We only have one practice left, let's make it a good one! Also, it looks like food is allowed in this building. At this tournament it's your responsibility to bring your own food, drinks and snacks for the whole day. Be there when the doors open at 8:15 am. Also, please eat a good breakfast and bring snacks, because we Ref, Play, Play, Ref, Play all with no break in between. BE PREPARED.

The St. Helens Middle School is located at 354 N. 15th, St. Helens, OR 97051. We do not charge an entry fee for spectators. Food is allowed in the building. We just ask that you clean up your team area. The school cafeteria space will be open for teams to eat and gather. Tables are available in this area. There is no viewing area on the gym floor due to lack of space. There is plenty of bleacher seating upstairs.

I apologize for the late notice but practice will be canceled tonight. I did try to find another coach to help, but no one was available. Sunday's practice at Grant is still on. We will have a full court and two full hours so that will be a tough practice to help get ready for the tournament. Enjoy your Friday night.

Congrats On A Great First Tournament

Great job on your first tournament. I'm especially proud of the way you all played in the last game of the day, with positive energy and solid focus, well done! At the end of the tournaments the team that has the most enthusiasm and love for the game will be the one that wins and in the end that was us! It was a bummer that we ended in a 3 way tie in our pool, next Power League tournament we will have to get over our 2nd set slump and dominate in two rounds!

Positives:
-Serving, we did an excellent job. Mckenna our first server didn't miss one all tournament, absolutely incredible.

-Passing/serve receive we did a great job even against tough attacks and serves! Putting backspin and getting your arms out early makes all the difference.

-Setters you did a great job with the new systems, they are different but will ultimately be what makes us more successful then our opponents.

Improvement Points:
-Cheers-scratch the ace cheer, i's just not working and a few others we need to work out, but hey I noticed we were one of the only teams with that kind of team camaraderie even if it wasn't all put together :)

-Transitions have got to get faster, we need to move from offense to defense and back to base back to offense...and so on QUICKLY! All this takes is discipline and focus. We spend entirely to much time watching the ball rather then focusing on more important things like setting up our offense and defense. If you can learn to transfer faster and to stay in a balanced body position through out an entire rally you will not only improve as a volleyball player but you will increase your volleyball IQ by being a smart player.

Next, we need to work on our offense (which includes hitting, setting, and covering the hitter). Skills wise we need to improve on setting consistently and hitting wise we need to position ourselves better in order to actually hit, not just down ball it. As far as cover goes, I will implement a new cover strategy before our next tournament that should help clear up confusion.

All you need to do is print the HARD COPY test (from the link below) and then fill out the answers, then you can bring the test to the tournament. I've been given the answers so we can go over them Saturday. Once I okay it, I can get you girls passed and approved to score keep.

Arrive: 7:30am. The tournament ends when we are knocked out of it. IF YOU CAN'T MAKE IT OR HAVE TO LEAVE EARLY TELL ME NOW.

Lunch: Is provided by our team parents, we are having Hot dogs/Chilli and fruit. If you want a different lunch bring it. Also be sure to bring enough to drink and snack on through out the day as athletes are not allowed to leave the tournament facility.

Here is the list of "What to Bring" that has been up on the site for the last month:

Uniform: Show up ready to play, even if we have a bi or are scheduled to ref first, I want you guys to show up in your uniform jersey, shorts, sweatshirts, and socks. You may put your knee pads and shoes on after finding out our schedule for the day.

Drinks and snacks: It will always be the players responsibility to bring enough water/sports drinks and any snacks they may want to eat for the duration of the entire tournament. Suggested: refillable water bottle, 2 sports drink and snack bars, granola, etc. Eating right through out the whole tournament is important to keep your energy up.

Comforts: We usually are given a spot where our team will hang out, it's not fancy, I'm talking cold floors. You may want to bring a folding chair, blanket, or pillow. Also, during down time you may want to bring an ipod, homework (I know, I know, yeah right) or other activity to help pass the time. I've noticed the usual means of passing the time for the girls, is to gab :) Also, none of these items will be locked up so please be smart about what you bring, things sometimes do get stolen.

As cheesy as this sounds attitude is everything so I expect my captains to stay positive, be focused and help lead our team to success. More specific duties will be added as needed.

Also, I loved the cheers you guys came up with today. We will work on the warm up a little more at the next practice. If you have ideas for a warm up that you liked from another team let me know and I'll see about incorporating it.

Defensive point: When playing back row, don't forget to charge the hole (and play up) on cross court attacks.

Great practice yesterday. We are starting to come together as a team. At next practice I will announce captains. So if your interested email me before the next practice and let me know why you would be good for the job. Also, our next practice will be fun because it's the practice we will come up with a good pregame warm up, cheers, etc. Start thinking about it now!

Also, I will have the rotations up on the site sometime before our next practice with subs, offensive sequences and basic offensive strategy with notes for Setters (on where I expect the ball to be set like where exactly is a 4 set, 2 set, 1 set, etc.)

Passing/Hitting Clinic

Let's recap what we learned from Coach Andres:

BALL CONTROL
The issue of ball control is universal in all volleyball. Simply put, whenever you pass, set or dig, you must have your arms out early 30-foot rule or 1.5 seconds, whichever comes first. Period. The most important reason for bringing your arms out early is that you gain more control. Learn how to move on the court with your shoulders, hands and arms out early! This can also help your teammates become better, by reading your nonverbal cues on the court, rather then just watching the ball they can make judgments on where a ball will be passed and be able to be at the right place at the right time. This especially helps setters. So get your arms out early and keep your movements simple, any extra movements that aren't necessary to the task (for instance swinging/scooping your arms before a forearm pass) will make it so that you loose some control. Work hard on this one aspect over the course of this season and you will become a better volleyball player and teammate.

Red Storm Parents and Players,

I just found out tonight that we will not be able to practice Wednesday 12/8. Major bummer! I asked to rescheduled for Friday, but gym space is full. We will resume practice Monday Dec. 13th at our regular time. Also, those who haven't paid the coaches fee or PDX fee please bring it to Monday's practice. If you can't pay in full that's okay we still need those post dated checks to show a financial commitment.

Here is the information that I went over in the parent meeting.

Also, I was asked about the PDX fee. If you are on a payment plan then you need to simply write out all the checks and payments and POST DATE them for the dates that work best for your family. Otherwise the payment is due Dec. 15th and you can give the check to me and I will give it to Dave our Director. Make these checks payable to PDX))VB.

PLAYING TIME:
Those who work hard, are on time, make it to practice, continue to develop as coached, and are positive will be rewarded with playing time. Having said that we will be a team that strives to win each game and compete at our fullest potential. Attendance will be taken at practice.

WEBSITE:
I have set up a website that I will use to communicate to my team and parents this site is strictly for our U16 Red Storm team. I will keep it up to date with our schedule, roster, photos, tournament schedules/directions and much more. It is http://pdxvb.blogspot.com. (Both Parents and Athletes should bookmark it.) This will be our main mode of communication. If you have a question, check the website first, then email coach, then call. This will ensure the fastest response.

MONEY:
$210.00 must be paid for the coaches fee. Cash is excepted. Please make checks payable to Rachael Rethwill. If you need payment plans then we can arrange that at after the parent meeting.

PRACTICE:
Our practices will be at Robert Gray Middle School address is: 5505 SW 23rd Ave Portland, OR 97239 from 7:30pm to 9:00pm Monday's and Wednesday's. This may change due to gym availability however this is the time and place we will practice the majority of the time. Also, if school is closed practice will be cancelled.
UNIFORMS: They will be Red and white uniforms with black socks. The players will also receive a warm up sweatshirt. We will have sample sizes at an upcoming practice for the girls to try on. After I receive them I will pass them out prior to our first tournament.

TOURNAMENT INFO:

2 Rules:
-Don't be late and if you are for whatever reason, call me and let me know ASAP.

-No Leaving the tournament until the end of the tournament. No you can't leave with your parents to get something to eat. We will typically eat as a team during our designated break. It's far too difficult for me to keep track of 13 players if some leave and others don't.

What to bring:

PARENT VOLUNTEERS:
Power League Tournaments Lunch: I need volunteers for the 4 power league tournament dates. Parents that sign up will be required to provide lunch for 13 players. The girls will always provide their own drinks. Parents will be asked to provide a main lunch coarse, 1 side of fruit, 1 other side, and plates, napkins, silverware.

It works best if 3 parents sign up for each date. If you want to sign up for more than 1 date that's great! If you can't sign up for any then that's okay too. Once parents have sign up, then I will email the group with each other's contact information so that you will be able to work out who's bringing what and what will be served. I will also provide easy and inexpensive ideas in my initial email.
Carpooling Connection Volunteer: I am looking for a contact that will help coordinate those who may need a ride to tournaments and maybe even practices. This person will be asked to call or email when a player expresses to me that "they need a ride."

Passing CHECK POINT

Body Position: Feet wide apart, hands in front and palms to the ceiling. Feet should be at least shoulder width apart. Position is low and balanced with feet pointing straight ahead. Arms and shoulders are relaxed. Shoulders are forward and hips are back. Hands ahead of head. Head ahead of shoulders, shoulders ahead of knees, knees ahead of feet. Hands are inside of knees and
knees are inside of feet.

Sweet Spot: The ball should come off the same spot on your lower forearm (just above the wrist) each time. Checkpoint: Look to see where your forearms are red after passing.

Hips and One: Keep the hips back throughout the pass. If you need to swing your arms, the arms should swing in only one direction while passing.

Redirect: Make sure your forearms face in the direction you want the ball to go. Start out facing the server and always face the ball when you pass. The path of the ball should arc to the top of the net.

Consistent Contact Point: Contact every ball at waist height and be as consistent as possible.

Pre-Hop: Move to a short ball by starting with a left step and ending with a left- right step, quick, low and solid. Use the same fundamentals every pass if possible.

Congratulations on making the team! You have made this team because you have shown that you have competitive grit, a great attitude, and are coachable and ready to learn!

There is nothing more exciting then starting a new season. Just think right now we are all strangers and in a few short months we will be like family. We will all sweat, laugh and fight in competition together.

Your parents are a huge part of our team and our success too! I look forward to meeting all of them and having them share in your athletic growth and development. I'm hoping to ask parents for some much needed help during the season for things such as; planning team bonding activities i.e. secret sister, team parties, award ceremonies, etc. Please email me if you have a parent that is interested.

Communication and trust are the most important values that I expect from my team. I expect that all of you communicate your goals, fears, thoughts, and feelings with me. I have both coached and played for many years so I realize it's not easy playing club with family, school, and life pulling you in a million other directions. I hope that you can trust me enough to let me know when something is not working for you. With that being said...when we're in the gym, it's go time! I expect your focus and I trust that you are all there to learn and grow in volleyball, and in life.

I can't wait to get to know all of you and what gets you fired up!

PLAYING TIME:
Those who work hard, are on time, make it to practice, continue to develop as coached, and are positive will be rewarded with playing time. Having said that we will be a team that strives to win each game and compete at our fullest potential.

Friday Dec. 3rd from 6:00 to 7:30. Please check in frequently with the Practice schedule. You can find a link to it under "Important Links" on this page or at pdx-vb.com.

PARENT MEETING:
Friday Dec. 3rd, at 5:45 at Robert Gray Middle School, we will then have practice from 6:00-7:30. Parents please come with any questions you may have.
